Week 2

It has been another great week.  Our students are falling into routine and instruction has not been lacking.  We don't waste or take advantage of our time with our students.  Thank you!

We will have a fun activity on Wednesday at our faculty meeting.  Meet me in the Media Center at 3:10.  After our activity, I'll share a few announcements and we will watch the second of our required legal videos.  Don't worry, I'll bring chocolate.

Kaye and Lori are seeking information from you concerning the development of ELA and Math PD.  You will receive a short survey from them.  Please take a quick moment to respond so they can plan and organize the most beneficial PD possible.

I share the interesting article below that I stumbled upon.  It has some valuable points.

What Doesn't Work: Literacy Practices We Should Abandon
Literacy strategies that waste instructional time include looking up words on lists, prizes for reading, weekly spelling tests, unsupported independent reading, and denial of recess.

First Week = Success

What a week!!  I think we all (students included) are exhausted, but overall it was a great first week of school.  You folks have amazed me.  Everyone stepped up to help morning and afternoon dismissal run smoothly.  Classroom teachers were prepared on Monday morning to warmly welcome their students.  We have very little to complain about, but there is always room to improve.  If any of you have suggestions for improvement, I'm all ears.  Please email or drop a note in my box.

We have many shout outs on the board in the workroom.  Swing by and see if someone has "thanked" you and remove your ticket.  We will draw on Monday afternoon.  This is taking off and I love that you take the time to acknowledge each other.  Keep it up!

Reminders from the week:
  • Sunshine Fund contributions are $20.00 for Full-time faculty/staff and $10.00 for Part-time faculty/staff.  You can pay with cash or check (made payable to PGE.)  See Ms. Cindy.
  • From Reading Council representative, Sonya Robinson:  I wanted to take a moment to encourage you to join the reading council as the committee has worked hard to put together some exciting programs this year. The cost for joining is $15. Once you join, your name will be added to the “Dream Team Board” assembled in the workroom/teacher’s lounge. Let’s work hard to build membership. We are always SO close to 100% participation. This year, let’s nail it!  Go PGE TIGERS!!
    • The first program is scheduled for September 27, 2016 at Newberry High School (time TBA). The speaker will be James Bryan with a session titled Literacy Tailgating: Let’s Kick-Off the Year Learning Together. Please see your NCRC flyers that have been placed in your boxes for detailed information and for other events this year.
  • From Amy Milstead:  If you are interested in ordering a school shirt to celebrate reading I am placing a sign-up sheet in the work room.  It will be located above the sink along with a picture of the shirt. Please sign-up no later than Friday, August 25 if you are interested!  Also please pass this on to assistants!
  • The representative from Ident-a-kid will be here Wednesday morning.  We will send directions for you on Monday.
If you are not receiving email notifications of new blog posts, check your clutter.  That is where I found mine.  If you move it back to you inbox, you should then get the rest there.

The video below was shared with me by three different people on Friday.  It is a great reminder how just how powerful our words and actions are every single day.

I hope you all enjoy your weekend and come back refreshed to tackle week 2.  :)

Calendar, Forms, & Subs

The PGE Master Calendar invites have been sent.  If you have problems creating an icon on your desktop for the calendar, I'll be happy to help.  You will also have access to the Master Calendar using the link at the top of the blog.

I've added information in the Forms and Subs section as well.  The preferred list is just that, the subs we have had in our building and we trust.  That list will be updated throughout the year as we have new substitutes added.  If you have a sub this year that you feel we could add to the list, let me know.

Ready or Not...here they come!

Ready or Not, here they come....good thing we are ready.  Our kids don't need a decorated classroom, or perfectly shelved books, or the most organized first day possible.  OUR kids need to be welcomed, to feel comfortable in their new rooms, and to be loved.  That makes us ready!!

A few reminders for Monday:
  • Wear your Navy shirts, white/khaki pants
  • Be at your classroom door to welcome your students
  • Announcements will come over the intercom until the Morning News Show is up
  • Don't forget to do your enrollment sheets and send to Ms. Cindy
  • Breakfast WILL be served
  • No Related Arts on Monday
  • If you would like for Mrs. Milstead to come read to your class, email her a time
  • PBIS rotations will begin at 9:30 depending on your schedule.  An email was sent Friday night with the rotation schedule and locations
  • Don't forget to charge your walkies for recess and dismissal

Information for the days/weeks ahead:
  • ESOL and Resource will begin on Wednesday, August 17th
  • Enrichment will begin the week of August 29th
  • Lessons Plans posted to OnCourse and will begin being checked by administrators the week of September 6th
  • You can donate to the Sunshine Fund ($20 for full time and $10 for part time) at any time the first weeks of school.  See Ms. Cindy.
The refrigerator is full of food and drinks.  Fill free to help yourself for lunch on Monday or until all is gone.

I'll post the Master Calendar to the blog on Monday.

If there is anything you need over the weekend, please don't hesitate to call/email me.

See you all Monday!

Welcome to the NEW BLOG!!

Hello to our Pomaria-Garmany Faculty and Staff!!!

I don't know about you, but the summer has been a blur.  I hope that your summer was filled with laughter, trips with family and friends, time for relaxation, and even a few mornings of sleeping in.  I hope it has also re-energized you for the upcoming school year.

It has been nice catching up with many of you during registration.  Thanks to those who gave their time to help out.  We had many compliments on how smooth our process was and it was definitely a team effort.  We are looking forward to officially welcoming you all back for the 2016-2017 school year on Monday morning. Plan to be here at 8 a.m. and we will gather together in the Media Center for Breakfast at 8:30.

I am thrilled that we have 11 new faculty and staff members joining our team this year.  Again those folks are:

We will take some time after breakfast getting to know each other.   Please prepare to bring with you 10-20 pictures that tell about "you".  These can be pictures of family, friends, children, pets, trips you have taken, fun things you did over the summer, etc.  You can bring photos or a device to show them.  You will share your pictures with your table mates and take some time introducing yourself.

Open House is scheduled for Thursday, August 11th from 5:00-7:00.  The PTO will provide dinner that night for our faculty and families.  Salad and Pizza will be provided for our staff in the workroom at 4:30.

I am attaching schedules below for the 2016-2017 school year.  As you begin working on your classroom schedules, refer to the recommended minutes for each grade level and content area.  Once you have your schedules completed, please send Mrs. Graham and I a copy.  I'll send a reminder later next week.
